The Amazons: An Upward Trajectory

A year ago to the day, The Amazons struggled to sell 300 tickets to a show at OSLO in Hackney. Tonight, they’ve sold out The Forum. That’s 2300 people – and a year-on-year increase of 666%, if you’re counting. Chances are, nobody in this Kentish Town landmark is. After all, there are more pressing matters, like being blown away by four young musicians with a one-way ticket to The O2 Arena stage. A thrilling rock band with songs as hot as the van blazing on their debut album’s cover, the quartet’s success is definitely deserved, but certainly not overnight....

Live: Cheap Trick @ Forum Kentish Town

Having just released their 18th studio album, We’re All Alright it’s pretty clear how influential Cheap Trick are within the rock industry. Spanning a history of over 40 years it was no surprise to walk into the Forum Kentish Town to find what can only described as a more mature audience ready for a night of guilty rock pleasure. Live: Simple Plan @ Kentish Town Forum

Simple Plan know what a noisy, sweaty old-school rock show needs. The psyched audience scream on command. The showman singer likes to leap off the monitors, continually whips the crowd up into a frenzy, and suddenly appears at the mixing desk. The wild drummer stage dives and crowd surfs. Fog blasters and streamer cannons go off with wild abandon. Bras are thrown up onto the stage. T-shirts and giant beach balls get lobbed into the crowd (complete with a “playing with my balls” joke from the frontman). And the band unleash one riotous punk anthem after another. Tonight the...

Live: Blossoms @ The Forum, London

Stockport rockers Blossoms’ story is one that truly endears them to their audience and the music industry alike. They’re young, fresh and full of energy, but with an understanding of the struggle it takes to succeed in the music business, each member having tried and failed in past musical endeavours while working other jobs to make ends meet. In a stark contrast to the plethora of manufactured bands that come and go with the seasons, it’s Blossoms’ songs that have got them where they are. As it should be. The Tom Ogden-led indie rockers played their biggest London headline...

Photography: The Avett Brothers @ The Forum.

The Avett Brothers from Concord, North Carolina,USA played to a packed house and showed off their new album The Carpenter. Their music has developed from down-home folk to a blend of “sad-banjo” ,as the NME call it, and “banjo-rock”, as I call it. On stage they jump around a hell of a lot. and the whole set here: Photography was mainly wide angles and prime lenses. It was heavily backlit so I ramped up the ISO to around...
