Live: Evanescence @ Apollo Hammersmith

One of the best things about doing this is that you get to experience live music that doesn’t necessarily twitch the antennae. To be honest, it’s unlikely I’d have been mixing it with a sold-out crowd tonight at the Eventim Apollo Hammersmith for an evening with Arkansas rockers Evanescence were it not for the chance to snap them – but I’m very glad I did, on a number of levels. First of all, we got lucky with access right at the front. The band were known in journalistic circles for being a little camera shy on this tour, having...

Live: Sting @ Hammersmith Apollo

Sting is a man who needs no introduction. Or maybe he does in a world where his solo tour has been hitting up medium-sized venues rather than the arenas and stadiums of years past. He is probably known to most as former The Police frontman, the 1970’s new wavers who exploded globally with their three-piece rock offerings before bowing out in a blaze of glory following hit 1983 album Sychronicity (obligatory noughties reunion tour not withstanding). But Sting was always more than just a rock singer and bassist, having a foundation in both Spanish guitar and jazz, so it’s...

Live: Bear’s Den @ Hammersmith Apollo, London

It’s funny, I always think of the Hammersmith Apollo as one of London’s bigger, less personal, gig venues.  But last night Bear’s Den managed to make it feel like the back room of a smoky pub. Whether it was their particular brand of spiritual, emotive folk rock or the soft but striking set lighting I don’t know, but I liked it. Since Joey Haynes left the band last year, Bear’s Den don’t play alone. On stage with songsmith and lead vocalist Andrew Davie and singer and multi-instrumentalist Kevin Jones, is Dutch session man Christof van der Ven on guitars and banjo,...

Live: Elbow @ Hammersmith Apollo, London

I’m grateful to my wife for so many things. She spots the traffic cameras I don’t. She’s always on hand with salient fashion advice. Her meringues are the stuff of legend. And then there’s Elbow. The first time I saw this band was in 2012 when they were touring Build A Rocket Boys!. I was quite churlish about it. My wife, a long-term fan dragged me there, but I just knew it wasn’t going to be very good. The traffic was awful. We had crappy little seats at the back of crappy big Wembley Arena. The sound was average. It...

Live: Caro Emerald @ Hammersmith Apollo

“Good evening London city!” Dutch jazz singer Caro Emerald screamed. “This is the very last show we’re going to play in the Absolutely Me tour tonight” she continued. “We’re going to make it a party, enjoy!” The Amsterdam-native brought her 18-date UK headline tour to a close with a show at West London’s Hammersmith Apollo. Coming to prominence in 2009, following her debut single making waves in the Netherlands and her second single reaching number one in the Dutch charts, both released on her own record label, she quickly followed up that early success with debut studio album Deleted...
