Victorious Festival 2017, Three Days of Southsea Sunshine

I am local to Portsmouth, and I admit that I became slightly concerned before attending my third Victorious Festival. Victorious refuses to stop growing. It engulfs the entire city, with stages on the southernmost coast, and a new campsite on Portsmouth’s northernmost border. With victory after victory (just thought I would get the references to being ‘victorious’ out of the way), it felt as though it might disastrously shut down Portsmouth for the bank holiday. Perhaps that is destined to happen one year, but the strongest line-up yet spearheaded by Madness, Stereophonics and Elbow, along with abnormally gorgeous weather, made...

Live: Y Not Festival 2017

It looks like Y Not festival has finally found its answer and the operative word of the weekend was most definitely mud. Marred with problems from the start, the festival was cancelled on the morning of the final day, seeing only one out of the three main headliners perform, with other big names’ sets being cut short or reduced to DJ sets. The festival started with a bang with Feeder and The Skints headlining a Thursday set, drawing early crowds and getting what was a well-billed British summer festival on its way. In true British summer fashion, it didn’t...

Live Review: Frank Turner & The Sleeping Souls @ O2.

Early on in tonight’s show, Frank Turner stops and takes a moment to consider the obstacles that the universe has thrown in our collective path in getting to this, his first headline show at London’s mammoth 02 Arena. He cites the current phenomenal storms lashing and flooding the UK. He points to the city’s tube strike, which was called off only just in time for fans to get to the gig unimpeded by transport chaos. Lastly, he reels with amazement that everyone has actually ventured to a venue that is south of the river. Geographical divide jokes aside, both...

Interview: Billy Bragg & Frank Turner. Shelter From The Storm.

Two powerful voices in protest music took to the London streets on 17 December for a lunchtime busk in aid of homeless charity Shelter. Billy Bragg and Frank Turner share a few things in common – a punk past, a guitar almost constantly slung over their shoulder and a bucketful of rousing, self-penned songs. The fit seems perfect for a pre-Christmas singalong to help raise money and awareness for a very worthwhile cause in a two-part fundraiser, with the free busk followed by a gig at Wilton’s Music Hall the next night. Just before the busking session, Billy and...
