Live: Music Venue Trust #FIGHTBACK Benefit Concert @ Roundhouse

In Eastney, on the fringes of Southsea in Hampshire lies an empty, unassuming looking pub now hiding behind sagging net curtains and white washed windows. Eighteen months ago, it was The Cellars, a truly special, vibrant live music venue that attracted some of the freshest upcoming talent around. It was a place where I had spent many happy evenings. The fate of The Cellars is being replicated across the country and you don’t need to have lost your local venue to feel the effects. Emerging artists need somewhere to play other than between ad breaks on Saturday evening TV....

Rock Show: Music Venue Trust stages a Fightback!

The Music Venue Trust (MVT), a registered charity created in January 2014 to protect the UK live music network by securing the long-term future of grassroots music venues, has declared the full line up of artists to appear at the FIGHTBACK! fundraising gig being held at Camden’s iconic Roundhouse (a venue that has been saved from closure several times over the years) on Tuesday 18th October. Announced with exactly one months’ notice, MVT initially invited offers of support from artists who wished to participate at FIGHTBACK! and they received over eight-hundred replies. The final list of acts that will perform across three stages is headlined...

Live: Half Moon Run @ Roundhouse

Playing their biggest headline show to date, Montréal-based indie rockers Half Moon Run returned to Camden, albeit the Chalk Farm end, just a few months after their explosive Koko show following the release of their second studio album Sun Leads Me On. Yes, I went along to their Koko show (read all about that one here) and immediately went out and grabbed tickets for this Roundhouse follow-up as soon as it was announced. Why? Because I haven’t enjoyed a show so much in a while and the chance to do it all again was too much to resist, being asked along...

Live: Suede @ Roundhouse

Live: Suede @ Roundhouse “Let’s have it!” yelled Brett Anderson at the Roundhouse crowd before Suede transitioned into 1996 album Coming Up’s hit single Trash, the North London crowd erupting into a frenzy at the opening bars. But that came well into the evening’s events … The London-based alternative rockers have been known over the past 25 years as a group who innovate, struggle to find their place, collapse, reform, elevate and have ultimately become a band that will always have a true rock and roll backstory. And so with their seventh studio album Night Thoughts due to be released in...

Live: Bear’s Den @ Roundhouse

Live Review Bear’s Den @ Roundhouse English alternative folk band Bear’s Den played their biggest headline show to date to a sold-out crowd at London’s 3,300 capacity Roundhouse on the closing their run of shows in support of debut studio album Islands, which was released a year ago on Communion Records, the label founded by Bear’s Den drummer and bass player Kevin Jones along with Mumford & Sons’ Ben Lovett back in 2006. The tour follows a busy summer of festivals for the band including stand-out sets at Chicago’s Lollapalooza, Spain’s BBK Live in Bilbao as well as an...

Live: The Waterboys @ Roundhouse

I’m not sure I can remember the last time I saw a band open with not one, not two, but three consecutive songs taken from an album released just a couple of weeks before. What might be deemed a fatally optimistic move for some bands, manages to work for Mike Scott and crew. The band’s latest rollicking, folk-strewn rock and roll material sweeps the audience out to the high seas inhabited by The Waterboys and contained, for a night, by the Roundhouse. Opening track Destinies Entwined is followed by Still A Freak, with the laid back murmur of November...

Live: Augustines @ Roundhouse

Brooklyn-based indie rockers Augustines, formally We Are Augustines, played their final show of a short European tour at Camden’s Roundhouse in support of their eponymous second studio album. Starting the show with tracks from their debut Rise Ye Sunken Ships, the Billy McCarthy-led trio opened with Headlong Into The Abyss before launching into fan-favourite Chapel Song which featured in Curt Morgan’s 2011 hit snowboarding film The Art of Flight. Although the roots of this band come from the ashes of Billy McCarthy and Eric Sanderson’s former band Pela (and a battle to get out their debut record the way it...

Live: The Specials @ The Roundhouse

The Roundhouse is heaving with those ready to skank. It’s the first of three nights that The Specials are playing at London’s venerable circular venue, as part of the band’s ongoing reunion tour. The surprising opener is the cool chill of Ghost Town, their number one hit single from 1981. With a set comprised of familiar songs, perhaps the best way to keep people guessing is to introduce one of the most prized possessions upfront, before everyone has even got their drinks from the bar? Early on in the set, we are treated to Friday Night/Saturday Morning, Stereotype and...

Live: Blondie @ The Roundhouse

Blondie’s 2013 UK tour took them to Camden’s legendary The Roundhouse on 7 July and Kew The Music festival on 9 July. Imelda Michalczyk went along to photograph for Rockshot and Rebeladelica The band were promoting their new album Panic of Girls. Opening both times with One Way Or Another and mixing up old classics such as Heart Of Glass, Dreaming and Atomic with new songs such as Drag You Around and What I Heard, they transformed what could otherwise be simply a nostalgia trip into a forceful show by a still creative act. The current line up includes...
