The annual Rockshot party at Oslo got off to a bad start, illness, flooded flats and literally a lack of spark. Those of us that did make it were in for a real experience. OFF! are one of those bands who have to be tried out at least once in a lifetime, just so you can say I was there.
Long term live partners Cerebral Ballzy shattered the Oslo bar reverence and skateboard punked through their very early set. Lens-man Dmitry turned up ready for the off of OFF! (always wanted to say that) and fought his way to the front to get his shots.
Now punk parties back in the day used to be a late night affairs but this lot wanted to see us safely wrapped up in our beds by 10pm. The stage times confused a lot of people and most were still arriving when OFF! were halfway through their performance. I think the good men and woman of Hackney were pounded into submission. What has totally stuck with punk is noise and OFF! are extremely loud the crowd have to stand back from the speakers if they can, some cover their ears.
Keith Morris and cohorts live the dream with a mix of thundering hardcore, psych-jazz and death-bass you can see the walls move at Oslo. The legend of Circle Jerks and Black Flag live on live! Dimitri Coats plays some stellar guitar, for those in the know he is also front man and guitarist of the band Burning Brides and he is electric on stage. Steven Shane McDonald hits and picks that bass like no-ones business and if you wanted your hair singed by some super hot playing you came to the right place.
Later the band take a trip to BBC Maida Vale and record sessions for the Rock Show on Radio 1 hanging out at the old John Peel studio. All in all a great party for those of us that made it and what a headache afterwards….punk eh?
